the liver of a brain-dead patient

Doctors at the Global Hospitals harvested the liver of a brain-dead patient on Thursday. He had been on ventilator support for over a week.

Radhakrishnan, 36, of Triplicane sustained head injuries during a fight with a friend on February 22. He was taken to the Government General Hospital and later, moved to the private hospital. Last Thursday, doctors declared him brain-dead and his relatives agreed to donate his organs.

But the process got delayed due to a disagreement between health and police department officials. While doctors argued that brain-dead patients were eligible to donate organs as per the Transplant of Human Organs Act, the police maintained that brain-death was not defined in the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

After discussions with legal experts and senior medical professionals, police permitted doctors to go ahead with the transplant. The body was sent to the Royapettah Government Hospital for a post-mortem.

The Triplicane police had arrested Radhakrishnan's friend Anju alias Venkatesan on charges of attempted murder under section 307 of the IPC. Police said that Venkatesan picked up a quarrel with Radhakrishnan, who was drunk and apparently verbally abused women passers-by.

"We have altered the charge to 302 (murder) and will issue the arrest summons to the accused in Puzhal Prison," said Triplicane deputy commissioner of police, N M Mayilvahanan.
