girls parade topless to raise funds for UK troops

It may appear a bit weird, but a dozen glamour girls stripped off and paraded topless through the city of Manchester to show their
solidarity for British troops fighting abroad.
The women, wearing only tight leather trousers and camouflage body paint across their chests, bared their assets to persuade stunned onlookers and public to donate to buckets to raise cash for British forces, the Sun reported.
The event was organised by artist Fanny Gogh, as part of a campaign run by the Support Our Soldiers charity set up to aid members of the Armed Forces.
Sarah Longbottom, a model who has a brother serving in the forces, said: "We want to get our lads some decent luxury items, if it means us getting our boobs out then we are going to do it."

'Bravery' of teenage girl

A teenage girl says she killed a militant with his own gun after insurgents attacked their home in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Three militants stormed into Rukhsana Kauser's home in a remote village in Jammu region on Monday and started beating her parents in front of her.
Ms Kauser, 18, and her brother turned on the gunmen, killing one and injuring two more. Police praised their courage.
One of the militants wanted to marry Ms Kauser against her will, police said.
The militants escaped and are now being sought by police who are using their blood trails as clues.
'Fired endlessly'
The insurgents went to the house looking for Ms Kauser but her father, Noor Hussain, resisted their demands, Rajouri district senior police superintendent Shafqat Watali told the BBC. I had never touched a rifle before this, let alone fired one - but I had seen heroes firing in films.Rukhsana Kauser
Three gunmen then entered the house and attacked Ms Kauser's parents, while four other militants remained outside.
"My parents told me to hide under the bed and then opened the door," Ms Kauser told the BBC.
"Without saying anything they [the militants] started beating my parents and my uncle. They beat them so badly that my parents fell on the ground. I could not see that and pounced on one of the militants while my brother hit him with an axe," she said.
"I thought I should try the bold act of encountering militants before dying."
Ms Kauser said she grabbed one of the militants by the hair and banged his head against the wall. When he fell down she hit him with an axe, before snatching his rifle.
"I fired endlessly. The militant commander got 12 shots on his body."
Her brother, Eijaz, 19, grabbed one of the other militants' guns and also began shooting.
Ms Kauser said the exchanges of gunfire with the militants had gone on for four hours.
"I had never touched a rifle before this, let alone fired one. But I had seen heroes firing in films on TV and I tried the same way. Somehow I gathered courage - I fired and fought till dead tired."
'Bravery'
Police identified the militant commander as Abu Osama, who they say was a member of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba group and had been active in the Rajouri area for the past five years.
Local residents told police that he wanted to marry Ms Kauser - and was prepared to do so forcibly.
Rajouri police superintendent Shajqat Watali praised what he said was the "exemplary bravery" of Ms Kauser and her brother.
"The reaction by these teenagers was extraordinary."
There are now fears the family could face retaliatory attacks, so they have been given police protection.
But Ms Kauser wants more: "We cannot live here in this village. They should relocate us to a safer place in Rajouri town or elsewhere. The militants are not going to leave us after this embarrassment in which a top commander was killed."

Coconut water becomes cool in hip

The odd whitish spheres resting in a tray of ice outside a bodega on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn were strange enough to make passers-by do a

double take. Strolling down the Williamsburg street, Martin Mancusi, 30, a tourist from Barcelona, Spain, and his friend Alejandro Kaed, 33, stopped to examine the items: young peeled coconuts, waiting to be pierced by a straw and sipped tiki-style by someone young and fashionable, as they have been all summer.

Like banh mi sandwiches and sriracha chili sauce, the young coconut and its juice is the latest formerly humble food to be discovered by New York City's style set, and elevated — if not quite to the level of a status symbol — at least to that of a prized accessory.

In the last few months, retailers in hipster hot spots like Williamsburg and the Lower East Side say they have sold unprecedented amounts of the fruit for streetside consumption. "I think it's stylish, it's pretty," said Zarifeh Saleh, who owns Bedford Avenue Fruits and Vegetables with her husband, Ayman Ismail. "You feel like you're on the beach, but you're not on the beach."

Across the street at Bedford Avenue Health Food, the owner, Mahdi Matany, said that since he began carrying them in April, he sells six cases of nine coconuts each every warm weekend. Ismail and Saleh say they sell up to 10 cases. Some say the public ritual is part of the drink's allure.

"I don't ever go and buy a bunch of coconuts and stock them and drink them at home," said Jennifer Verdon, 30, a band manager who lives on the Lower East Side. Lining the inside is the gelatinous flesh, which can be scraped out and eaten while drinking the cloudy liquid. They usually cost $2 to $4 each.

Cracking a coconut and drinking its contents has long been a practice in the city's South Asian and Hispanic communities. But young people walking around the city toting a three-pound coconut that is usually relegated to the beaches of Phuket seems to be a new phenomenon.

US sends homeless sex offenders to woods

-- A small group of homeless sex offenders have set up camp in densely wooded area behind a suburban Atlanta office park,

directed there by probation officers who say it's a place of last resort for those with nowhere else to go.

The nine sex offenders live in tents surrounding a makeshift fire pit in the trees behind a towering "no trespassing" sign, waiting out their probation sentences as they face numerous living restrictions under one of the nation's toughest sex offender policies.

"It's kind of like a mind-game, it's like 'Survivor,'" said William Hawkins, a 34-year-old who said he was directed to the campsite two weeks ago after being released from prison for violating probation for failing to register as a sex offender in Georgia.

The muddy camp on the outskirts of prosperous Cobb County is an unintended consequence of Georgia's sex offender law, which bans the state's 16,000 sex offenders from living, working or loitering within 1,000 feet of schools, churches, parks and other spots where children gather.

It's not the only place in Cobb County where offenders can live — there are hundreds of other sex offenders throughout the county living in compliance with the law. But Ahmed Holt, manager of the state's sex offender administration unit, calls the camp a "last resort" for homeless offenders who can't find another place to live that complies with the law.

He said probation officers direct them to the outpost if other options fail, such as transferring to another county or state or sending them to a relative's place that meets the requirements. Critics say it's an example of how laws designed to keep Georgia's children out of harm's way create a hazard where penniless sex offenders live largely unsupervised at the government's urging.

Hitler might not have died in a bunker

The theory that Adolf Hitler committed suicide in a bunker by shooting himself has been proved wrong as DNA test has found that the skull

fragments thought to be of the dictator are actually of a female.

Historians and scientist have long held that Hitler took cyanide and shot himself in an underground bunker on 30 April 1945 to escape being caught by Russians.

A piece of skull touted to be Hitler's, complete with bullet hole, had been taken from outside the Fuhrer's bunker by the Russian Army and preserved by Soviet intelligence, the Daily Mail reported.

But, DNA analysis of the skull fragment by American scientists has found it to be of a woman under 40. Hitler was 56 in April 1945.

"We know the skull corresponds to a woman between the ages of 20 and 40," said University of Connecticut archaeologist Nick Bellantoni.

"The bone seemed very thin; male bone tends to be more robust. And the sutures where the skull plates come together seemed to correspond to someone under 40."

Bellantoni, whose findings were telecast on History Channel in US, flew to Moscow to take DNA swabs at the State Archive and was also shown the bloodstained remains of the bunker sofa on which Hitler and Braun were believed to have killed themselves.

"I had the reference photos the Soviets took of the sofa in 1945 and I was seeing the exact same stains on the fragments of wood and fabric in front of me, so I knew I was working with the real thing,"

India’s Jurassic nest

Hundreds Of Dino Egg Clusters Found

Radha Venkatesan | TNN

Coimbatore: Hundreds of fossilised dinosaur eggs have been found underneath a river stream in a tiny hamlet in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu. Researchers believe the eggs are at least 65 million years old.
In a chance geological encounter, a team of researchers from the Salembased Periyar University found clusters of eggs of what they believe to be the most aggressive Carnosaur and the docile, leaf-eating Sauropod, at Sendurai village. While Carnosaurs were large predatory dinosaurs, Sauropods were long-necked, herbivorous dinosaurs notable for their enormous size.
The geological sites of Ariyalur are known to be a treasure trove of dinosaur remains, but it is the first time that hundreds of nests embedded with hundreds of clusters of dinosaur eggs have been unearthed in the district.
Located on the highway between Chennai and Tiruchi, the Ariyalur and neighbouring Perambalur geological sites nestling in the northern plains of the Cauvery river, are a veritable field museum of ancient organisms, dating back 14 crore years. Ever since a British couple, Mrs and Mr Wine, collected 32 boxes of "strange stone objects" in 1843, the Ariyalur region has drawn geologists from across the world for its rich fossil presence and diversity. Scientists have found the tiniest marine algae or nano fossils, besides rare shellslike bivalve, gastropoda, telecypoda and brachiopoda in the geological sites spread across 950 sqkm in Ariyalur and Perambalur districts.
"We found clusters and clusters of spherical eggs of dinosaurs. And each cluster contained eight eggs," says Dr Mu Ramkumar, geology lecturer of Periyar University. Each egg is about 13-20 cm in diameter and the clusters were lying in sandy nests of the size of 1.25 metres.

Volcano may have ended dinosaur run

Coimbatore: In the 1860s, a British geologist first recorded the presence of bone remains of dinosaurs in Ariyalur of Tamil Nadu. Over a century-and-half later, the egg of a dinosaur was found in a cement factory of the state-owned Tamil Nadu Cements Ltd in 1990s. But the officials figured out that it was a dinosaur egg only 10 years later!
On a sultry noon on September 12 this year, Dr Ramkumar, geology lecturer of Periyar University, and his research students went to Ariyalur to scour the rocks and sediments as part of a study funded by Indian and German scientific institutions. As they paused by a river stream on grazing land at Sendurai hamlet, they found spherical-shaped fossils peeping out of the sand beds. "We got really excited. As I have seen a dinosaur egg, I was sure they were dinosaur eggs," says Dr Ramkumar. A quick dig revealed clusters of eggs nestling beneath seven layers of sand, spread over 2 sqkm. The eggs may not have hatched due to the Deccan volcanic eruptions or seasonal flooding, surmises the team. "We suspect the extinction of dinosaurs was triggered by the Deccan volcano, as red bole bed formed by the volcanic ashes cap the eggs," say the researchers.

gay minister

Guido Westerwelle and his gay partner are Germany's new "power couple" — at least according to the nation's leading daily, which splashed a
photo of the pair hugging on election night on the front-page in Tuesday's paper.

The ringing endorsement for the 47-year-old Westerwelle, who is widely expected to be tapped for the high-profile post of foreign minister in Chancellor Angela Merkel's new government, in the Bild daily also highlighted his personal life in a way he rarely has.

"His man makes him so strong," Bild wrote about Westerwelle, declaring that his 42-year-old partner Michael Mronz was not only his most important adviser during the campaign, but also "gives him security and... supports him when he suffers a setback."

Despite eight years as leader of the pro-business Free Democrats, Westerwelle's homosexuality has generated relatively little discussion. But with his party set to become kingmaker to Chancellor Merkel's conservatives and him foreign minister, it has been thrust into the spotlight.

Germans have been generally tolerant of openly gay politicians and others have paved the way, including Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit, who already declared back in 2001 that "I'm gay, and it's good that way."

Ups and downs

Today was such a weird day. I had a very strange emotional night last night, to the point of almost crying myself to sleep with Hank holding me! Gag. I hate feeling that way...and really for no reason! I just felt stressed out and full of anxiety and when I get that way there's usually not a reason for it, it's just a feeling in me and once I get through it I am fine. But while it's there, it's bad. So anyway I went to bed feeling not so well, and I woke up feeling not so well either. This carried throughout my day, and whether it was my mood, or my kids just being jerky, it wasn't a good day in my classroom. I got home and fell asleep on the couch, basically feeling hopeless and just very sad overall. I woke myself up because I had a gym date with my friend Robyn (I ended up waking up too late and miss the "Pump Iron" class, boo), but I made it to Spin class. The class was just what I needed, and 60 very hard minutes later I was covered in sweat and everything negative in my body had left. I came home feeling great and when Hank got home from practice he could tell I was back to normal.

I spent the rest of the night making a little video (below) to announce the winner of the giveaway- yay Chelsea- and then hanging out with Lance and Hank for awhile. I'm whitening my teeth right now and then I am hitting the hay. Tomorrow I am determined to have an amazing, positive day no matter what. After work Robyn and I have a long run planned through downtown and I am really looking forward to that. She's an awesome workout partner and I feel very fortunate to be able to have a friend to share my fitness adventures with!

So, that's it for now. I hope all of you also choose to have a wonderful, positive day. It's easier said than done, but it really is a choice, and no matter how you feel right now, you can choose to wake up tomorrow and make the best of it.

Here's to a great day! And a goodnight... :)

Congratulations Chelsea!

A Nightmare on Elm Street [Trailer]

The 1984 original is one of my favourite horror films. The remake is set to be included in my Re/Made series. New Line Cinema have released the trailer.

While I was initially dismayed at the prospect of a remake I did concede to Freddy In Space that I will watch it upon release God willing.

Having said that the TFi qualifications for remake are

  • has enough time passed since the original release - ie at least a generation?
  • is the cultural landscape conducive for a retelling of that particular story?
  • can it time translate - ie are the salient points still relevant?
  • is the story good enough to be retold?
(If you can think of any others let me know. I may incorporate them in the manifesto)

The trailer does its job! I'm excited but I don't want to be disappointed.

The Japanese series Ringu had a prequel (Ringu 0). The Canadians had Cube Zero. I hate prequels. Why explain - ie debunk - the myth? Contrary to earlier leaks and according to this trailer
this prequel is a sequence which only exists in the first act. Still I think it is a thematic mistake as it serves to humanise Freddy. The beauty of the original was we the audience experienced the film through the hero's eyes. We learnt what Heather learnt as she learnt it. We felt her horror. It was our horror. Setting up Kruger as a lynched victim regardless of his crime justifies his response. That's not horror - that's revenge.

They threw a lot of images in the trailer; there's Tina's levitation scene - it looks horrendous. The pool party scene looks like it's from A Nightmare... part 2 1985. Though there's an excellent close up of a little girl's shredded blouse (knives for fingers) and of course that iconic bathtub scene.

Unfortunately none of the actors look or seem like much kop. I also find it disappointing that the cast looks whiteout. I'm sure there are plenty of Elm Street's, towns and lynch mobs that consist of whites only but the film makers could/should have included teens of other races. We existed in '84 and they exist now.

On a final note it's a gross error to show Freddy's face (lighted) in the film never mind the trailer. In the original we never got a good look at him. He hardly said much. In this trailer he's talking biscuits. That dialogue wasn't chilling it was perfunctory.

Wesley Strick is co-screenwriter. He also rewrote Cape Fear 1991. That was good. That was not horror.

Am I still excited? I'm a horror fan. I intend to see it. I intend to blog it.

I hope I'm scared of it.

Psycho dad

It's a story that will send a chill down your spine, a story of a 60-year-old father, who locked, beat and starved his wife and daughters for 7.

Francis Gomes, a 60-year-old unemployed man, living in Mumbai along with his wife and 3 daughters had confined his family in the house since 2002.

The father allegedly kept them locked up as he was convinced that his girls would be raped if they even stepped out of home.

It is believed that every morning before Francis left home he would lock the door giving the impression that the family was away. The women were often denied food and fresh clothing. The windows had been boarded, denying them sunlight; they were prohibited from watching television, so much so that when the youngest daughter failed her college exam, the father hit her so hard that she suffered severe neck injuries.

A few months ago, Francis' second daughter along with the help of an NGO managed to escape the clutches of her father. While the social workers managed to rescue her, the other 3 women were too scared to leave the house with them, fearing that Francis would successfully hunt them down.

Fortunately, on Tuesday morning social workers belonging to the NGO Anand Rehabilitation Centre along with the police rescued the three women from the house, while Francis was away. The police now have Mumbai's psycho dad Francis Gomes in their custody, after local resident in Vasai, Mumbai informed the police about his whereabouts following reports in the media.

While the girl, who suffered neck injuries, is being treated in a government hospital, the other two daughters, who are malnourished and traumatised, are under psychological care. The wife too is under medical care.

Hollywood and the Progressive Left Rally Around Roman Polanski and His Lifestyle Choices.

If you're uncritically accepting of enough, eventually you'll accept anything. Besides, it isn't wrong if it opens big on Friday.

Below, a video explanation of the Hollywood mindset. And remember: no matter what Roman Polanski did, Larry Craig tapped his foot!

ADDITIONAL NOTIONS:

1. Of course, by the time this reaches HBO and the Law and Order franchise, Polanski will have morphed into a Milius-esque two-fisted action film director beloved in the flyover states. When Hollywood projects, it's in IMAX.

2. Decency is as alien to Hollywood as pliés are to line dancing.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A Senate panel on Tuesday rejected a government-run "public" insurance option as part of a broad healthcare overhaul, setting up a fight over one of the bill's most contentious issues.

Democratic Chairman Max Baucus opposed both amendments, and said Democrats could not muster the 60 Senate votes needed to clear Republican procedural hurdles and pass a healthcare reform bill if it includes the public option.
"I can count," Baucus said. "No one has been able to show me how they can count up to 60 votes with a public option in the bill."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has vowed the public option will be included in a final bill.
"The more the American people hear about the public option, the more they like it," said Democratic Senator Charles Schumer, who sponsored one of the amendments.
The Senate Finance plan by Baucus is the only healthcare reform bill pending in Congress that does not have a public insurance plan, which Obama and other backers say would boost competition for insurers.

Republican critics say the public option would devastate the private insurance industry and ultimately lead to a government takeover of the sector.
Democratic Senator John Rockefeller, who offered the other amendment to insert a public option, said the approach would give the public more choices and force the insurance industry to compete.
"Who comes first, the insurance companies or the American people?" he asked.

Senator Charles Grassley, the senior Republican on the panel, said the public option would represent a first step toward the eventual goal of Democrats -- a complete government-run health insurance system.

"A government-run plan will ultimately drive private insurers out of business," Grassley said. "If you support government bureaucrats, not doctors, making decisions, you should support this amendment."

Five Democrats joined panel Republicans to oppose Rockefeller's amendment, 15-8. The second amendment, by Schumer, failed 13-10 with three Democrats opposed.

The $900 billion Baucus bill, one of five pending in Congress, is designed to control costs, regulate insurers and expand coverage to more of the 46 million uninsured people living in the United States.

The plan under consideration by the Senate Finance panel would create state-based exchanges where individuals and small businesses could shop for insurance, but would not offer a government-run plan as an option.

As an alternative, the committee's bill would create nonprofit insurance cooperatives to create competition. Rockefeller and other public option backers say cooperatives are unproven and would not offer enough competition.

Rockefeller's amendment would have tied reimbursement rates for healthcare providers to the lower rates under Medicare, the health insurance plan for the elderly, for two years.

If that happens, Conrad, who is from North Dakota, said, "every major hospital in my state goes broke."

Rockefeller and Schumer said they had expected the issue to lose in the more conservative Senate panel but wanted to kick off debate. Republicans were skeptical.

"If it's so popular, why are there so many Democrats who have a problem with it?" Republican Senator John Ensign asked of the public option.
