a short film.

My friends Brittney and Marcella shared this on their respective blogs earlier today and I thought I would also post it here after it moved me to tears. Since becoming a Mom I've found that my respect for other parents has only grown, and the respect that I have for any single parent is just immeasurable. It's hard enough doing this job with two people, and I can only imagine the struggle it can be with one. I have a quite a few single mama friends, and quite simply, you are all amazing and inspire me every single day with your perseverance and strength. I thought this film was beautiful, and I wanted to share it here, with all of you.

any thing worth £3,000 trillion

Earth is worth £3,000 trillion, according to an astrophysicist who claims to have created a formula to calculate the value of a planet.

The astrophysicist, Greg Laughlin, came up with the figure by calculating the sum of the planet's age, size, temperature , mass and other vital statistics – and Earth came out as the most expensive.

"The formula makes you realize just how precious Earth is and I hope it will help us as a society safeguard what we have," he said.

Mars was only valued at £10,000, while Venus is said to be worth less than a penny. There are about 1,235 other planets in the universe, most of which weren't given a high price tag because of their inhospitable climates.

Obama Addresses Union, Democrat Violence...

In a carefully planned speech of bipartisan outreach, Obama called on the GOP and Tea Party to stop provoking hardworking Democratic politicians and unions members  into attacking and threatening to kill them.

"And tell those sluts in the Wisconsin massage parlors to start dressing more modestly!" the tough-talking, inspirational leader of the free world said.  "We need all the Democratic State Assemblymen we've got!"

Millionaire Gives Up Entire Fortune To Be Happy

Millionaire Gives Up Entire Fortune To Be Happy

An Austrian tycoon is giving away every penny of his £3 million ($5.3 million) fortune, having realised that
being rich made him unhappy.

Karl Rabeder, 47, a businessman from Telfs, near Innsbruck, is selling his villa with lake, sauna and
spectacular mountain views over the Alps, valued at £1.4 million. Also for sale is his old stone farmhouse in
Provence, on the market for £613,000. Already gone is his collection of six gliders valued at £350,000. Mr
Rabeder has also sold the interior furnishings and accessories business - from vases to artificial flowers - that
made his fortune.

"My idea is to have nothing left. Absolutely nothing. Money is counter-productive - it prevents happiness."
He will move out of his Alpine retreat into a small wooden hut in the mountains or a simple bedsit in
Innsbruck, surviving on £800 a month while the proceeds go to a charity he set up in Latin America. He will
draw no salary from it.p

"For a long time I believed that more wealth and luxury automatically meant more happiness. I come from a
very poor family where the rules were to work more to achieve more material things, and I applied this for
many years."

being rich made him unhappy.
But over time a conflicting feeling developed. "More and more I heard the words: 'Stop what you are doing
now – all this luxury and consumerism – and start your real life'," he said. "I had the feeling I was working as
slave for things that I did not wish for or need. I have the feeling that there are lot of people doing the same
thing." For many years, he said, he was not brave enough to give up his comforts. The tipping point came
during a three-week holiday with his wife in Hawaii.
"It was the biggest shock in my life when I realised how horrible, soulless and without feeling the five-star
lifestyle is."

"In those three weeks we spent all the money you could possibly spend. But in all that time we had the feeling
we hadn't met a single real person - that we were all just actors. The staff played the role of being friendly and
the guests played the role of being important, and nobody was real."
Mr Rabeder decided to raffle his Alpine home, selling 21,999 tickets at £87 each. The Provence house, in the
village of Cruis, is on sale at the local estate agent.

All the money will go into his microcredit charity, which offers small loans and advice to self-employed people
in El Salvador, Honduras, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina and Chile.
Since deciding to sell up, Mr Rabeder said he had felt "free, the opposite of heavy". But he did not judge
those who chose to keep their wealth. "I do not have the right to give any other person advice.

women like funny guys

We all know that women like funny guys  but empirical evidence for this phenomenon has been sorely lacking. Fortunately, in a recent study in the journal Psychological Reports, a French scientist took up the challenge of testing whether humor helps men pick up women.

In the study, "Men's sense of humor and women's responses to courtship solicitations: an experimental field study", the author (who you might remember from such classic studies as "Women's bust size and men's courtship solicitation" and "Bust size and hitchhiking: a field study" set out to test whether "producing humor might function as a fitness indicator associated with greater desirability during dating selection."
For the experiment, the researcher recruited several young "male confederates" (no, not the Southern kind) to help out. The guys sat in a bar near a woman, and one of them was instructed to tell (or, in the control condition, not tell) three jokes to his companions.
The two companions were instructed to respond with phrases like "That's hilarious!" and "You always know the good ones!". The companions then left, and the joker asked the woman (who had overheard the whole charade) for her phone number. Finally, the woman was "debriefed" and asked to take a short survey to rate the guy on his attractiveness, intelligence, and sense of humor.
The result of these shenanigans? "The previous expression of humor was associated with greater compliance with the male confederate's request and with a higher positive evaluation." In other words, the guy who told jokes was rated as funnier and more attractive by the women, thus snagging him more phone numbers.
So basically, the author thinks women like funny guys because it shows their intelligence, but men choose women for other reasons—perhaps bust size?

graffiti art the UAE a university student

Talented street artists abroad have a cult-like following, but here in the UAE a university student is using his talents to make his mark. Anyone familiar with street art knows that it is fast turning metropolises worldwide into outdoor museums and has come across the name Banksy. He is an anonymous British street artist who has plastered public walls of cities worldwide with satirical stencilled graffiti art.
"People have been doing street art before Banksy, he just made it famous worldwide," said street artist 'Nasa'.
The 24-year-old hails from Palestine, a place with infinite wall space, and has lived in North America, the Levant and other parts of the GCC before settling in the UAE.
"It was in Canada where I had a real eye-opening experience and got into art," he said. "Growing up I wanted to study art but then decided to go into architecture instead, because it's the mother of all arts."
Nasa is a term away from graduation at a university in the UAE, after which he plans to spend time in the Netherlands, working at an architectural firm and developing himself as a street artist.
Graffiti is illegal in the UAE and can come with hefty fines of up to Dh10,000 and a year in jail. There is, apparently, a thriving underground scene. "People here are scared to go out in public and do street art but there are abandoned houses around the country filled with the stuff."
Some, like Nasa, have tried their luck and displayed their artwork in the public domain; but much to the credit of the UAE's individual emirate's municipalities, the pieces do not get much air time.
"Every time I do a piece in public, I'll go back the next day to check on it and it'll have been covered up." Nasa then said playfully: "It's amazing how efficient these guys are, they must have an army working 24/7."
However, it was one piece Nasa did in Dubai, which landed him legitimate work as an artist.
He did two Nutella pieces mocking Andy Warhol's iconic Campbell's soup piece, which Nasa says is a representation of American culture. "Nowadays everyone is a sucker for Nutella," he said. Through 'Nutella' he was commissioned to design the walls of a very popular local online business.
Inspired by all things man-made, Nasa has no definite message he aims to deliver through his work, but simply looks to make people smile.
"Random street art makes people's lives a little easier because for a moment in time it disrupts their boring lives of working like computers," said Nasa. "I just want people to smile because not a lot of people do that any more."

he would ever sing on stage again

"It all started off as a joke. Someone remarked in class — Mr Clark, he might speak up if you agree to shave your head.

"That led to the Tae Woong Project, which was launched about three to four months back," Clark told Gulf News.

"We distributed flyers to the whole school explaining the challenge. If Tae sang in front of a crowd, I would let him shave my head," he continued.

Every week, on Thursday, a 500-strong crowd including pupils and parents of primary classes gather for the school assembly.

"Every Thursday, we would ask Tae if he is up to the challenge yet."

He wouldn't respond.

Finally, at the assembly two days ago Tae made it. He sang the Korean national anthem.

"There was not a dry eye in the audience. It was the most moving experience I have had."

The teacher admitted that it was not an easy feat for him either, especially since he had inhibitions about revealing his psoriasis affected scalp.

For facing his fear, Tae will be an inspiration to all other pupils, Clark added.

"I was a bit scared and nervous," Tae said.

Asked if he would ever sing on stage again he said he's not sure.

Getting rid of his hair certainly wasn't one thing William Clark signed up for when he decided to become a teacher.
But today, he's happy that he went bald for a cause — putting an end to his 10-year-old pupil's grave fear of public speaking.
The daring teacher and his Korean pupil, Tae Woong-jeong, are part of the GEMS World Academy, located in Al Barsha.
At the beginning of this academic year, Clark got fifth grader Tae as his pupil. Initially, when Tae refused to speak up during group activities or present his ideas in front of his class, Clark assumed it might be due to language difficulties.
However, once Clark read through Tae's written work and saw how well he interacted with his friends, the teacher realised the real problem — intense fear of public speaking.
Tae had been with the school for two years. By then, most teachers had given up on getting him to speak, although their curriculum places much significance on the skill.

Indian toxic story

It is a juxtaposition of contraries that has now become ironic. Even though Punjab government has found a negligible number of farmers who merit Rs 2 lakh compensation, given to those who are driven to suicide because of debt, a Dutch researcher has been overwhelmed by the tragedy which has almost become an every house tale in the villages.

Tom Deiters, who had come to India six years ago to carry out research on farmer suicides in Lehragaga area, as an academic exercise, was moved by the destruction that the pesticides were wreaking that he decided to stay-on for a longer time.

His documentary "Toxic Tears" profiles the heart-broken men and women in Punjab's villages who had lost their sons to the faulty farming practices. An old woman, her face heavily creased with age, in Chottian village, broke down as she narrated how her eldest son had drunk the very pesticide, which had trapped him in a debt, to end his life four years ago.

A year later, her younger son, unable to tolerate a failed crop and more debt, followed suit. Tom, whose thesis was for doing Masters in International Relations, a part of political science, at the University of Amsterdam in Holland, is now using the Punjab model, to highlight how globalization is far removed from reality. "The evils of so called "green revolution" are so stark in Punjab," said Tom Deiters, while talking to TOI.

"I want to use Punjab's example to show how the policy makers are not connected to the reality. This is important because other states in India like Bihar want to follow Punjab's footsteps," he said. Frustrated by the pattern of the vicious trap that he had seen replicated across the villages, Toxic Tears, highlights how motivated people, especially commission agents, are taking pains to deny the very existence of farmers' suicides.

"Farmers are borrowing money at outrageous rates from agents, many of whom are doubling up as agents of pesticides and fertilizers. There is a strong bias at work, "said Tom, who is now more focused on solutions. Punjab government too had been in a state of denial regarding the suicides and had maintained that these were only isolated cases.

"Organic farming, free of chemicals, is a way out, though it has own set of problems. But, there are farmers who are waking up to this fact. I am trying to map organic farmers in Punjab and start a self help group. The organic farmers can get together, learn from each others' experience, market their produce together and watch the community's interests, " said Tom Deiters who has travelled extensively to Europe to study organic farming.

found a decent job. murder case

Sixteen-year-old guy, the prime accused in the Borivli murder case of Subhashchandra Desai, was desperately in need of money after lying to his parents that he had found a decent job. Praveen is now lodged at the Dongri home for juvenile delinquents with his 17-year-old co-accused . Their third associate, Sanjay Ranpise (21), has been remanded in police custody till February 28 by a metropolitan court.

The three were unemployed. "Praveen, an only son, had recently told his parents that he had found a job with a monthly salary of Rs 5,000. But as month-end drew near, he got worried. His parents would have demanded the salary amount," investigating officer Nitin Tadakhe said.

"Praveen, Om and Sanjay knew that Desai was homosexual and frequently visited him at his residence. When they learnt that Desai owned a lot of property, they decided to rob him. To avoid being identified by Desai later, they also plotted to kill him. The plan was hatched at a garden on Chandavarkar Road," another official said. The police has learnt that Praveen was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness. His associate, Om, has a past crime record. "Om was involved in two burglary cases at Borivli (W) in 2009. He was caught both times, but Desai helped him procure bail," the official added.

On Sunday, Praveen went to Desai's apartment alone, while Sanjay stood at a skywalk overlooking the house and Om waited in the garden. After attacking Desai repeatedly with a knife, glass bottle and bowling pins, Praveen ushered his friends into the house. But the boys found only Rs 1,500 and two old cellphones in the house. They then put everything back in its place and slipped out of the house, leaving Desai in a pool of blood. The keys to the flat were hidden at Om's residence.

Police officials said Sanjay and Praveen reside at Rawalpada in Dahisar. Om stays at Eksar in Borivli.

volvo active at all speeds

After decades of residential speeding campaigns, one car manufacturer has finally pulled out all the stops.

Volvo has developed a pedestrian detection system that automatically brakes a car to a halt whenever someone steps out in front of it.
Designed to save lives on urban streets, the 'support function' kicks in at speeds of up to 22mph, although the technology 'is active at all speeds'.

It works by using radar and camera technology to watch out for other vehicles and pedestrians ahead of the car.
Should a collision be imminent, an audible warning is made to alert the driver, and if there is no response the car is immediately brought to an emergency stop.
The system doesn't work at night or in poor weather, and Volvo is quick to point out that 'it is always the driver that is responsible for driving safely'.
Fourteen per cent of all those killed in car accidents in Europe are pedestrians; this figure stands at 11 per cent in the U.S.
The Swedish car manufacturer estimates that its detection system would reduce the number of pedestrians killed by more than 20 per cent, while the number of those seriously injured would fall by almost 30 per cent.
In a further 30 per cent of incidents, a collision would be entirely avoided, Volvo said.
The system is an optional extra in the Volvo XC60, S60 and V60.
The collision warning system is also programmed to react if the vehicle in front is at a standstill or is moving in the same direction.

Four awesome grooves from Kerri Chandler in the form of the Ozone EP, plus bonus 6:23 Again Remix!

Continuing our string of new releases, Madhouse Records is back with another stunning release from the main man behind the label – Mr Kerri Chandler.

Hot on the heels of "Heaven" comes the "Ozone EP" , a collection of four brand new deep cuts from Kerri, plus a bonus remix of "From Day One" 6:23 Again style.

"From Day One" is up first, and it's pure Kerri Chandler all the way. A pulsing synth and deep bassline groove this one along building all the way.

Kerri works the filters on "13 To 41" with a filtered brass-esque loop that drives the track backed by a great drum groove. You can tell he had fun making this one!

"My Moody Life" sees Kerri getting musical with an improvised piano solo that runs throughout backed by a deeper feel than the other tracks here.

Kerri brings the cheeky riffs out on "Peace Of My Mind" which bounces along whilst building the vibe up and down all the way through.

The EP is rounded off by a slightly more hyped 6:23 Again Mix of "From Day One" – one for the 4am crew!

Will Big Tobacco Ruin Royal Hopes of an Oscar?

Call me cynical, but I suspect a lot of the Academy are going to take time off from wishing they were Charlie Sheen to demonstrate their moral fiber by passing over the superb "The King's Speech" because of all the — period and character-correct — smoking in it.

Anti-tobacco groups and academics such as those at the UC San Francisco as well as film review sites such as ScreenIt! have already pounced on the issue.  Even the Internet Movie Data Base warns of it.

In the midst of the current push to vilify any movie with smoking in by granting it an R-rating as MPAA policy, will this historical fact hurt a fine movie with today's shallow and ignorant Hollywood?

5 quick ways to make our blog world a more positive place

balloons

It's no secret that I love blogging. And if you're here reading this, you probably do too! There's all sorts of people in our little/big community here: writers, readers, those who comment, those who don't, passer-by, regular guests. We all play our little roles to make up this larger tapestry often referred to as the blogosphere, our wonderful virtual world full of creativity and buzzing with connections. Most of the time it's a very positive place, but sometimes it isn't. Just recently I saw a slew of nasty comments pop up on a friend's blog and as usual, I was appalled. Why do people find the need to be so hurtful while hiding behind a computer screen? Rhetorical question for sure because I don't think anyone but the commenter ever knows. But it got me thinking...what can we do, now, to make our blog world a happier, more positive place? For one, absolutely ignore those negative nellies. They unfortunately do play a role here, but we don't need to acknowledge them. Instead, let's do things that build this community, foster connections, and encourage creativity. Sound good? Below are five quick things you can do now to keep this world turning in a positive direction, or at least in our little corner. I did all of these things this week, and it was not only fun to reach out, but I made a handful of new friends in the process. So awesome.

1. Take 20 minutes and click on 5 random blogs you otherwise wouldn't have visited. You can do this by checking out familiar blog's daily reads (mine will be updated this week!), profiles, or if you really want to get crazy you can use the "explore" option in Google Reader. Check them out, read through a few entries, and if you're intrigued, click the follow button. At the least, be sure to leave a comment saying hello and that you're just stopping by and share how you found them.

2. Really read. And really comment. It's hard to read through the hundreds of blogs many of us subscribe to, but if you find the time, really take in an entry or two, think about it, and leave some thoughts in the comment box. It's so fun to read comments that really tell me something and respond. And there's no greater feeling than hearing "me too" or "I love this, etc." with some details after you've put a little piece of yourself out into the world.

3. Reach out. Write an email to your favorite blogger or a new blog you recently discovered. I read a huge array of blogs, and I don't always reach out and say hello.  Yes, I am one of those readers who takes in every word but doesn't always comment! It's something I'm definitely working on, because I know how much every single one of the comments here warms my heart. But even better is just writing a quick email that lets someone know how much you enjoy what they're creating. I finally reached out to one of my favorite blogs this week, and she responded and told me that she was actually thinking of stopping because she thought no one read it! Ahh! I would have been so sad, and it only made me think more about how great it is to actually reach out.

4. Share the love! I started doing a blog spotlight feature here because I feel like there's nothing better than supporting other people in their creative endeavors. It's so fun to pick a blog from your daily reads and share them with the world, and it's something everyone can do. I love discovering new sites, and a spotlight or links feature is always a great way to give exposure to others that you feel are just awesome!

5. Finally, try something new to keep YOUR creative self moving and grooving! Perhaps do one of the popular "photo an hour" posts, a "what's in my bag" post, or a random facts share session. Video blog, interview someone, reach out and create a feature series with a friend! When you feel inspired, you inspire others, and what better way to beautify the world around you than by starting with yourself!

Good luck and happy positive-blogging! xoxo
