More than 1,000 fake dentists illegally ply their trade in and around Rome, an official said.
"It's a squad that is expected to rise to 1,200," Brunello Pollifrone, head of the National Association of Italian dentists, told AKI Monday.
Similar fraud is affecting Italy's orthodontists, with police impounding and closing an unauthorised office on average every three days, according the health and safety unit of Italy's paramilitary police.
With culprits facing just "a few hundred euros" of fines, sanctions must be made more severe to discourage illegality, Pollifrone said, suggesting that police confiscate dental equipment.
