Great Moments in Democratic Civility (1) -- FDR Crushes the Veterans!...Um, never mind...

Note:  As pointed out in the comments, it was Hoover who crushed the veterans.  I have to embrace my Biden moment.  You would think I'd remember Hoovervilles.... TBL

You Can't AFFORD a Future...!

In just six months, the largest tax hikes in the history of America will take effect. They will hit families and small businesses in three great waves on January 1, 2011:

First Wave: Expiration of 2001 and 2003 Tax Relief

In 2001 and 2003, the GOP Congress enacted several tax cuts for investors, small business owners, and families.

These will all expire on January 1, 2011:

Personal income tax rates will rise. The top income tax rate will rise from 35 to 39.6 percent (this is also the rate at which two-thirds of small business profits are taxed). The lowest rate will rise from 10 to 15 percent. All the rates in between will also rise. Itemized deductions and personal exemptions will again phase out, which has the same mathematical effect as higher marginal tax rates. The full list of marginal rate hikes is below:

- The 10% bracket rises to an expanded 15%
- The 25% bracket rises to 28%
- The 28% bracket rises to 31%
- The 33% bracket rises to 36%
- The 35% bracket rises to 39.6%

Higher taxes on marriage and family. The “marriage penalty” (narrower tax brackets for married couples) will return from the first dollar of income. The child tax credit will be cut in half from $1000 to $500 per child. The standard deduction will no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level. The dependent care and adoption tax credits will be cut.

The return of the Death Tax. This year, there is no death tax. For those dying on or after January 1 2011, there is a 55 percent top death tax rate on estates over $1 million. A person leaving behind two homes and a retirement account could easily pass along a death tax bill to their loved ones.

Higher tax rates on savers and investors. The capital gains tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 20 percent in 2011. The dividends tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 39.6 percent in 2011. These rates will rise another 3.8 percent in 2013.

Second Wave: Obamacare

There are over twenty new or higher taxes in Obamacare. Several will first go into effect on January 1, 2011. They include:

The “Medicine Cabinet Tax” Thanks to Obamacare, Americans will no longer be able to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin).

The “Special Needs Kids Tax” This provision of Obamacare imposes a cap on flexible spending accounts (FSAs) of $2500 (Currently, there is no federal government limit). There is one group of FSA owners for whom this new cap will be particularly cruel and onerous: parents of special needs children. There are thousands of families with special needs children in the United States , and many of them use FSAs to pay for special needs education. Tuition rates at one leading school that teaches special needs children in Washington , D.C. (National Child Research Center) can easily exceed $14,000 per year. Under tax rules, FSA dollars can be used to pay for this type of special needs education.

The HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike. This provision of Obamacare increases the additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10 to 20 percent, disadvantaging them relative to IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts, which remain at 10 percent.

Third Wave: The Alternative Minimum Tax and Employer Tax Hikes

When Americans prepare to file their tax returns in January of 2011, they’ll be in for a nasty surprise—the AMT won’t be held harmless, and many tax relief provisions will have expired. The major items include:

The AMT will ensnare over 28 million families, up from 4 million last year. According to the left-leaning Tax Policy Center, Congress’ failure to index the AMT will lead to an explosion of AMT taxpaying families—rising from 4 million last year to 28.5 million. These families will have to calculate their tax burdens twice, and pay taxes at the higher level. The AMT was created in 1969 to ensnare a handful of taxpayers.

Small business expensing will be slashed and 50% expensing will disappear. Small businesses can normally expense (rather than slowly-deduct, or “depreciate”) equipment purchases up to $250,000. This will be cut all the way down to $25,000. Larger businesses can expense half of their purchases of equipment. In January of 2011, all of it will have to be “depreciated.”

Taxes will be raised on all types of businesses. There are literally scores of tax hikes on business that will take place. The biggest is the loss of the “research and experimentation tax credit,” but there are many, many others. Combining high marginal tax rates with the loss of this tax relief will cost jobs.

Tax Benefits for Education and Teaching Reduced. The deduction for tuition and fees will not be available. Tax credits for education will be limited. Teachers will no longer be able to deduct classroom expenses. Coverdell Education Savings Accounts will be cut. Employer-provided educational assistance is curtailed. The student loan interest deduction will be disallowed for hundreds of thousands of families.

Charitable Contributions from IRAs no longer allowed. Under current law, a retired person with an IRA can contribute up to $100,000 per year directly to a charity from their IRA. This contribution also counts toward an annual “required minimum distribution.” This ability will no longer be there.

Now your insurance is INCOME on your W2's......

One of the surprises we'll find come next year is what follows - - a little "surprise" that 99% of us had no idea was included in the "new and improved" healthcare legislation . . . the dupes or dopes, who backed this administration will be astonished!

Starting in 2011, (next year folks), your W-2 tax form sent by your employer will be increased to show the value of whatever health insurance you are given by the company. It does not matter if that's a private concern or governmental body of some sort. If you're retired? Therefore, your gross will go up by the amount of insurance you get.

You will be required to pay taxes on a large sum of money that you have never seen. Take your tax form you just finished and see what $15,000 or $20,000 additional gross does to your tax debt. That's what you'll pay next year. For many, it also puts you into a new higher bracket so it's even worse.

This is how the government is going to buy insurance for the 15% that don't have insurance and it's only part of the tax increases.

Not believing this??? Here is a research of the summaries.....

On page 25 of 29: TITLE IX REVENUE PROVISIONS- SUBTITLE A: REVENUE OFFSET PROVISIONS-(sec. 9001, as modified by sec. 10901) Sec.9002 "requires employers to include in the W-2 form of each employee the aggregate cost of applicable employer sponsored group health coverage that is excludable from the employees gross income."

Ari David Declares Victory Against Apple the Goliath

Apple caves in, reverses censorhip stand:

by Ari David

"In a surprise reversal, Apple computer has approved my iphone application and is allowing it to be distributed in the iphone app store. Apple had originally declared portions of the application, which are critical of my opponent, Congressman Henry Waxman, to be defamatory of Waxman and thus, containing inappropriate content.
"I always asserted that the material in the app was perfectly appropriate because it was critical of Waxman‘s policy positions and actions he has taken as an elected official. The material critical of Waxman was also important to include in the iphone application in order to illustrate the policy differences between Waxman and myself.

"If Apple had continued to reject such material they would have severely compromised my right to free political speech because if political discourse is too controversial to discuss in public online spaces like the app store, where else will such discourse be banned?

"It’s nice that Apple decided to do the right thing is this case and I look forward to having everyone download the application which is available for free on itunes.

"Here is a link to the app

"I hope you enjoy it and share it with everyone you know."

THROW OUT THE SNOUT!

My Arizona Immigration Adventure!

Boycott Arizona?  Now there's a new idea.  Because it worked so well the last time...

1976, I was a brand new Democrat (having cast my very first Presidential vote for James Earl Carter) on top of being a terminal nerd.  Arizona had just refused to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).  Pulp writer turned self-promoting "speculative fiction" author Harlan Ellison had decided America had to punish the evil rednecks via Iguanacon, a regional SF convention in Phoenix.  He called on fans from all over the country to come to the convention but not to spend one penny on anything in Arizona.

Being 20 years old, a New Yorker, and a brand new Democrat, and thus being blithely certain I knew exactly how the world worked, I set off to Phoenix to teach them cowboys a lesson by my principled example, armed only with my sleeping bag, two boxes of Granola Bars and a Greyhound Bus ticket.

Now, because I was going out there to stand up to the Man, man, and because I had seen not only Billy Jack but also The Trial of Billy Jack, I knew what those evil western lawmen could get up to.  And also because I was a New Yorker, and didn 't drive, I didn't have a driver's license.  So I brought my passport, so I could legally identify myself in case the heat came down, man.

Once upon a time, Greyhound actually was a cheaper alternative to airline travel.  You had to make two minor tradeoffs, one in travel time and the other in the fact that you were traveling with all the other people looking for a cheaper way across the country.  In my case that translated into two and a half days and a kindly little old grandmother traveling to join the Perfect Master Maharaj Ji, who thought it would do her good to bring along a convert.

So after two and a half days of having Maude Frickert try to enlighten me, I stumbled off the bus in Phoenix to discover a) that I was hungry and thirsty, b) Phoenix was frigging hot and had a negative humidity index, and c) Harlan Ellison's idea of boycotting a state involved a fully-stocked camper in the parking lot and meals paid for by the convention.  Thus after the first day my principled example evolved into "Screw it, I'm buying a cheeseburger and a coke and that Wally Wood Sally Forth collection I saw in the dealer's room."

After a couple of nights crashing in the all-night film show and under draped tables in the halls, I climbed on the bus back to NYC.  Phoenix seemed largely unchastened by my gesture.   The only seat left on the bus was in back with a bunch of people speaking Spanish.  Being 20 years old, a New Yorker, and a brand new Democrat, and thus being blithely certain I knew exactly how the world worked, I said to myself, "Hey, Puerto Ricans" and thanked God they weren't eyeballing my chakras.

We motored out of Phoenix, having a high old time, sharing food and drinks (granola bars receiving a mixed reception), changed buses in Albuquerque, motored on happily... until the whole freaking world turned flashing red and blue.  State cops, country cops... and INS, who boarded the bus and started removing my seriously bummed Hispanic buddies.  It slowly began to dawn on me that these folks just might not be Puerto Ricans after all... especially after a couple of them produced expired Guatemalan passports.

However, that train of thought immediately derailed upon the appearance of a gut, a badge, and a holstered Chief's Special about six inches in front of my nose and the demand: "Let's see your ID, sir."

Now.  Did you ever try to explain to the INS why you need a US passport to travel between Phoenix and New York with a bunch of illegal Guatemalans?  The Harlan Ellison story carried surprisingly little weight.  The word "coyote"was bandied about rather freely and in varying tones of loud until we were finally able to agree that most coyotes probably didn't get on the bus with their customers and that my round trip ticket from NYC probably supported my story, since it was unlikely I would have to travel all the way to Arizona to score my illegals for whatever purpose.  The muttered question, "Yeah, but does he know that?" might have done some damage to my self-esteem, if I was minded to complain, which, um... I wasn't.

They did like the Sally Forth collection, though.

Since then, I've been somewhat skeptical of the value of organized boycotts.

SNOUT STUCK INTO OIL DISASTER

Henry "the Snout" Waxman, along with Bart ("Dead Babies are Bad, OK, dead babies are not so bad, er, hey, look at the pretty airports!") Stupac, have found out Halliburton worked on the exploded drilling rig in the Gulf.

Fresh from his triumphal attempt to investigate major corporations' health care write-offs, in which Waxman revealed that not only did he not understand the law they were obeying, but that he didn't even know it was a law he had voted for, Waxman is now promising to grill Halliburton on the technical details of an operation he is completely unfamiliar with in a field in which he has no education, experience or understanding.

Of course, as a 40-year Congressman, that covers pretty much any field, but face it, Halliburton could tell the Snout that they mixed a triple helping of fairy dust into the concrete to make sure it held and he would have no way of credibly challenging that assertion.  He hasn't even got the expertise to intelligently choose experts to challenge anything Halliburton might assert.

This is just another time-waster for the Congress and Halliburton, a money-waster for the American people, and a credibility-waster for the American press who will treat this like some kind of significant investigation.

White House: Obama to Keep $1,000,000 Goldman Sachs "Donation."

The White House has stated that President Obama will not be returning the over $994,000 he received from investment megabanker Goldman Sachs, even as his Administration brings action against the Wall Street firm for fraud.

WH spokesman Robert Gibbs was quoted as saying: "For YAY-us, the FILthy lucre has been SANCTIFIED by the touch of HIS hand!  Can I get an AMEN, brothers and sisters?"

Zombie Mannequin Defends Kulcha:

“Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance.”

So I have a Constitutional right to be a state- subsidized writer huh?

NOT GOOD ENOUGH, BITCH.

Where's the Federal  mandate for my guaranteed bestseller status, huh, you fascist harpy?

Where's my legislated PEN Award, you bourgeois slut!

Where's my government Hugo Award, you termagant?

You think you're doing me a favor?  Well, you ain't done enough, cow!  In fact, you can NEVER do enough.

I WANT MORE.  NOW. ALWAYS.

A Necessary Correction to Jason Horowitz of the Washington Post...

...and why Rahm Emanuel is not about to be thrown under the bus...

"And on Tuesday, The Post led the paper with a purported news story by Jason Horowitz saying that a president with Obama’s “detached, professorial manner”"drunken, chainsmoking incompetence" needed “a political enforcer” somebody who "showed up sober once in awhile" like Emanuel to have a chance of succeeding..."

No need to thank me, Jason.  Mind you, with staff screwups like the AF 1 New York terrorist flyover and the  WH gate crashers under his belt, Rahm is no Al Haig as Chiefs of Staffs go...

RAAAAACIST YELLOW JOURNALISTS KEEPIN THA BRUTHA DOWN!

Damn, he's good...

This call for Rangel to give up his chairmanship is meaningless, of course. It's a standard Democrat ploy.

Back when Barney Frank got caught with a gay brothel running out of his home and was censured for it Congress, he insisted that was punishment enough; he would never be able to hold a position of high influence in Congress.  How'd that work out?

Back when Pat "Leaky" Leahy had  to resign as head of the Intelligence Committee because his big mouth and desire to see his name in the papers got American agents killed, he was supposed to be finished. How'd that work out?

Dianne Feinstein had to resign her chairmanship of a VA committee after she got caught channeling somewhere between $1.3 and $3 BILLION dollars to companies she and her husband had an interest in. She's still on thecommittee, and she and her Westside backers are tied into the effort to steal land deeded to veterans in perptuity and hand it over to LA Developers.  How's that working out?

If Rangel wasn't anything more than a collection of appetites puffing out a badly-stuffed suit, he'd do what any smart Democrat does, make a token resignation and lay low 'til the smoke clears.  His constituents, the same NY morons who think Obama is going to pay their mortgages out of his 'stash,' will never vote him out of office.
