Swedish car-maker Volvo has announced that it will bring its entry level luxury sedan, the S60, to India in 2010. Volvo Car Company discontinued the production of the first generation S60 in May this year. The company is gearing up for the launch of the all-new second generation S60 by early 2010 in the international market. The same model will come to India by the end of 2010 and the car will be directly imported to India as a CBU. The S60 will compete in the entry level luxury segment with the Mercedes Benz C-Class, the Audi A4 and the BMW 3 Series. Ford group's Indian subsidiary, Volvo Car India, also has plans to set up a production facility in India, but it will do so only when the company starts selling a minimum of 2,000 units annually.

The second generation S60 is based on the same platform as the XC60. The new range of cars to roll out of the Volvo facility will stay committed to the company's goal towards improving passenger safety and making Volvo cars the safest on the road by 2020. The new car will also be smaller in dimensions than its predecessor and its design will be similar to the concept model of the S60 showcased by Volvo at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show.

The S60 will be manufactured at Volvo's high-tech facility based in Belgium and imported to India. "We will be launching the S60 in the Indian market after it is rolled out in Europe in the middle of next year. We hope to have it in India before the end of 2010," said Paul de Voijs, Managing Director, Volvo Car India. The company is looking forward to establishing a manufacturing plant in India but is keeping the project on hold until the desired sales target is achieved.
