Yilan is a county in Northeastern Taiwan that is known for the Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folk Game Festival. Because of that festival, the Dongshan River Water Park has become a dreamland for the children of Taiwan, a magnet for artists from all over the world and a cultural garden for the people of Yilan.
After taking in the fresh air and natural scenery of Yilan County, we set off for our next destination, Hualien County. We choose to drive along the Suhua Highway, which is believed to be the most beautiful road in Taiwan.
The Suhua highway serves as a pivotal connection in eastern Taiwan. It is located between Yilan and Hualien. Its northern terminus is in the port town—Suao in Yilan - and the southern end is near the entrance of Taroko Park in Hualien.
The highway runs through steep cliffs along the coastlines - some of the most beautiful scenery in eastern Taiwan. However, driving on this road can be a little dangerous since there are nasty curves, falling rocks and landslides, especially in typhoon season or when an earthquake occurs. So we drive slowly for the sake of safety and appreciating the beautiful scenery. During the 118-km journey, we stop at a roadside café to enjoy the beautiful Pacific Ocean as well as have a good rest during the three-hour drive.
