The capital saw 7.6 mm of rainfall in about 40 minutes, the highest it has received in a day in the month in the past 10 years. Delhi so far has received 10.4 mm of rainfall this November.
"The rainfall received was the highest in a day and in a month since 1999. The national capital had received 14.4 mm of rainfall in 1998," an official at the Safdarjung meteorological department said.
The capital recorded a maximum of 27.1 degrees Celsius, a notch below average while the minimum settled at 16.6 degrees Celsius, six degrees above average.
"The maximum and minimum temperature are likely to drop in the coming days. Skies will remain cloudy and there is a possibility of fog Wednesday morning," the official said.
Many people were caught unawares Monday night as it started pouring heavily.
"It was raining so heavily that I got stuck while going home," said Kashish Gupta, a marketing executive.
