Two robbers looted gold jewellery worth Rs 67.30 lakh from a couple travelling to Kolhapur, in Haliyal taluk on Tuesday
night.
According to the complaint filed at the Haliyal police station by Sunita Suresh Bhat of Sadashivgad, Karwar, Sunita and her husband Suresh Bhat were going to Kolhapur from Karwar on Tuesday by car, when their car developed a problem near Tatawal bridge in the evening. Two persons appeared on the scene and threatened them and looted their gold jewellery.
They robbed gold jewellery worth Rs 63.70 lakh, gold biscuits that were kept in the bag, 650 grams of pure gold, 200 grams of mixed gold, 3.5 kg gold ornaments and cash of Rs 7,30,000, including gold ornaments that Sunita was wearing -- one magalsutra, a pair of earrings, three finger rings and one bangle.
Though the incident took place on Tuesday night, Sunita filed the complaint on Wednesday morning. Suresh Bhat is the brother of a former MLA from Karwar, said sources. Police are investigating the case. This is said to be one of the biggest looting cases in Uttara Kannada district in recent years.
