A Heroin Addict at the Age of 13: Jessica Polmann, 18
Jessica started on heroin when she was 13. At first, she snorted the pure, cheap drug she had easy access to in East Rutherford, N.J. But by age 15, she had graduated to intravenous drug use
Now 18, she hopes that by speaking publicly about her experiences, she can help other young girls save themselves from living the unglamorous life of an addict.
Jessica recently spoke with U.S. News about her addiction. Excerpts:
On what she would tell other teenage girls. I would let them know that if you're going to use heroin, it's just going to lead to disaster. Females tend to disrespect the s--- out of themselves, and if they want to avoid sleeping with people for money, living on the street, and getting disrespected by anyone and everyone, then don't even go near it. Heroin will ruin your entire life.
On what she lost by becoming an addict. I don't remember any of my teenage years because I spent most of them using, in detox, or in rehab. It's not worth it to give up your entire life as a teenager just so you can be high. I wish I could have memories of prom, going to the beach, or just having fun. You know, normal girl stuff. I don't really even know what "normal girl stuff" means.
On rebuilding what were once broken relationships. I have a relationship with my sister now. When I see her here, it reminds me that I'm doing everything for her. I want to see her grow up. I don't want to see her go through what I went through or have her find me dead somewhere with a needle in my arm.
Mosquitoes Deliver 'Vaccine' Through Bites
A vaccine that uses modified live parasites just entered human testing. The new study "reminds us that the whole malaria parasite is the most potent immunizing" agent, even though it is harder to develop a vaccine this way and other leading candidates take a different approach.
Malaria kills nearly a million people each year, mostly children under 5 and especially in Africa. It's more of an in-depth study of the immune factors that might be able to generate a very protective type of response," said Dr. John Treanor, a vaccine specialist at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York, who had no role in the study.
few facts
A mosquito can detect a moving target at 18 ft away
Lay up to 300 eggs at a time, fly across 150 miles in their lifetime, range from sea level to altitudes as high as 10,800 feet (3,600 meters), develop from egg to adulthood in 4 to 7 days
The average life span of a female mosquito is 3 to 100 days. the male lives 10 to 20 days
A pole shift theory. u know south pole and north pole is changing
- One early popular proponent of a pole shift theory was Charles Hapgood in his books The Earth's Shifting Crust (1958) (which includes a foreword by Albert Einstein) and Path of the Pole (1970). Hapgood speculated that the ice mass at one or both poles over-accumulates which destabilizes the Earth's rotational balance, causing slippage of all or much of earth's outer crust around the earth's core, which retains its axial orientation. This happens either slowly (conservative version) or quickly (radical version). The results of the shift occurring every 12,000 to 20,000 years or so results in dramatic climate changes for most of the earth's surface as areas that were formally equatorial become temperate, and areas that were temperate become either more equatorial or more arctic.
Other theories which are not dependent upon polar ice masses include:
- A high-velocity asteroid or comet which hits Earth at such an angle that the lithosphere moves independent of the mantle
- An unusually magnetic celestial object which passes close enough to Earth to temporarily reorient the magnetic field, which then "drags" the lithosphere about a new axis of rotation. Eventually, the sun's magnetic field again determines the Earth's, after the intruding celestial object "returns" to a location it cannot influence Earth.
These theories are currently not accepted by the scientific community, but debate is ongoing. Pole shifts are a cataclysmic inversion of the planet's axis of rotation, up to 180 degrees; a sudden slippage of the planet's solid crust around the molten core. There are several major scientists of this century that also expouse this concept as an event that has happened before in Earth's past.
Geographic axis: man-made arbitrary north-south fixed reference that determines lines of longitude and latitude, and the geographic North and South Poles.
Axis of instantaneous rotation: the true astronomical axis; the rotation axis. The line drawn through the Earth about which it is actually rotating at any point in time. The points where the line cuts through the earth's surface are called the "rotation poles"; the visualised extention of the north axis line in space currently points to the star Polaris, the North Star.
Axis of maximum moment of inertia = the axis of figure: because the Earth is not a perfect sphere, but is physically an oblate spheroid, the position of the axis of figure is not a precise constant, but is affected by the constant change in the earth's distribution of total mass: (ie, by ocean tides, atmospheric cond- itions, plate tectonic movements, etc.).
The combinations, and movements, of these masses with gravitational, centrifugal and orbital velocity vector forces, create what we call the equatorial bulge, and thus, the axis of figure. If the Earth were a perfect sphere, there would not be such an axis. The angular difference between the astronomical axis and the axis of figure, called a "nutation", causes an Earth orbital spirical oscillation, known as the famous Chandler "wobble". The equatorial bulge, the rotation axis' angle of inclination to the ecliptic plane, the gravitational tidal forces of the Sun, Moon and planets, have an affect on the Earths' orbit that produces the famous precession of the equinoxes.
Axial Tilt: the ecliptic is the plane of the Earth's ellipsoidal orbital path around the sun; the rotation axis is currently inclined to the ecliptic by an angle of 23.5 degrees: this is called the obliquity, or tilt, of the axis. It is this axial tilt that causes our annual seasons. Due to orbital dynamics, the obliquity varies between a minimum of 21 degs. 39 mins. and a maximum of 24 degs. 36 mins. over a 41,000 year cycle. The axial tilt's rate of change, (angular differentiation), is currently measured as .013 degs. per century.
Geomagnetic axis: not to be confused with the geographical axis, as it often times is. The Earth's magnetic field (whose real source is still an ongoing scientific mystery, but generally attributed to the interactions between the interior molten convection currents and the nickle-iron core, generating an electromagnetic force field, coupled with the rotational and orbital forces), itself has, by its own lines of force through space, the magnetosphere, a north- south axis. At present, the angular difference between geographic and geo- magnetic north poles is about 11 degrees.
Through paleomagnetism, (the study of the magnetic properties of rocks), scientists now have solid proof that the earth's magnetic field, and thus the geomagnetic north and south poles, have reversed itself namy times in the past. Magnetic field polarity reversals are magnetic poleshifts. The geologic record also shows that the strength of the magnetic field varies widely in time, and fluctuates wildly during field reversals, sometimes dropping to zero gauss strength; ie: the field vanishes, disappears! It is also a proven fact that the magnetic poles wander, literally zig-zagging around its axis.
Mexican drug cartels muscling out Latin rivals
Mexican drug traffickers are branching out as never before — spreading their tentacles into 47 nations, including the U.S., Guatemala and even Colombia, long the heart of the drug trade in Latin America.
The expansion comes amid a military crackdown in Mexico and the arrests of major Colombian suppliers and poses a new challenge for efforts to stop the flow of drugs into the United States.
In dozens of interviews with officials and experts in seven countries, The Associated Press found that the Mexican mobs increasingly buy directly from the cocaine-producing Andes and have begun using countries as distant as Argentina to obtain the raw material for methamphetamine. Mexican gangsters have been arrested as far away as Malaysia as they seek new markets for cocaine and "meth" supply sources."There are more Mexican drug traffickers in South America today than at any time ever, period," said Jay Bergman, the Andean regional director for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
The United States has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to help Colombia dismantle its major cartels but may have actually helped the Mexicans gain traction in South America in the process.
In the past two years, Colombia extradited 14 warlords to the U.S. on drug-running charges and another six major traffickers have been killed or arrested. Mexican emissaries and money are flowing into the country to fill the void.
"The belief is that the Mexicans are trying to get closer to the source of supply and take over the transport," said Jere Miles, chief of the unit that tracks trade-based money laundering for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Web addresses exceed world's population
Bing has put the number of web pages at "over 1 trillion", while Google had earlier indexed more than one trillion discreet web addresses.
The current global population stands at more than 6.7 billion, which means that there are about 150 web addresses per person in the world.
And this could mean that if a person spent just one minute reading every website in existence, then he or she would be kept busy for 31,000 years, without any sleep.
"An average person would need six hundred thousand decades of nonstop reading to read through the information," News.com.au quoted Bing as saying.
Mark Higginson, director of analytics for Nielsen Online, said that the global online population had jumped 16 per cent since last year.
"Approximately 1.46 billion people worldwide now use the internet which represents a solid 16 per cent increase from the previous year's estimate (1.26 billion in 2007)," he said.
The largest Internet population belongs to China, with 338 million users online, which is more than there were people in the US.
However InternetWorldStats.com (IWS), a website that combines multiple data sources, has claimed that China's online population is more like 298 million.
"With the rates of India and China still quite low, there is ample room for growth in the coming decade," said Higginson.
But, measuring the online population could be tricky-there are servers, users, per capita numbers, and penetration percentages to evaluate.
And thus it is difficult to find a single figure to represent the world online population.
IWS combined data from the UN's International Telecommunications Union, Nielsen Online, GfK and US Census Bureau, and its latest global figures puts the number of internet users in the world at 1,596,270,108.
And this is just 23.8 per cent of the estimated 6,0706,993,152 people in the world. But it changes every day.
"In terms of the future, we anticipate mobile to contribute significantly to internet usage," said Higginson.
According to IWS, the top 5 countries with the most internet users are:
1 - China (298,000,000 users, or 22.4 percent of their population)
2 - US (227,190,989, or 74.7 percent)
3 - Japan (94,000,000, or 73.8 percent)
4 - India (81,000,000, or 7.1 percent)
5 - Brazil (67,510,400, or 34.4% percent) (ANI)
AUSTRALIA and other countries that took part in the Iraq invasion
AUSTRALIA and other countries that took part in the Iraq invasion could be asked to help a new British inquiry get to the bottom of why the war went ahead.
The head of the long-awaited inquiry, former civil servant John Chilcot, said last night he and his four fellow panel members would be interested in talking to officials from a range of countries that backed the US-led invasion.
However, if any member of the Howard government, which sent hundreds of troops to Iraq, agreed to co-operate with the inquiry, they would not be compelled to give evidence.
"I don't rule out discussions with key international figures, figures from other countries insofar as they are willing to have discussions with us," Sir John said as he began outlining the terms of reference for the inquiry.
"I am very conscious of the fact that the Iraq conflict on the side of the West was an alliance with a number of members from different countries.
"They, too, will have been seeking to learn lessons and we shall need to take into account as best we can any conclusions they find or are in the process of forming.
"(But) discussions and evidence sessions aren't necessarily the same thing and, of course, we have no power to compel witnesses here let alone people in foreign governments."
Former British prime minister Tony Blair, who controversially agreed to join the US for the 2003 Iraq invasion, will be one of the star witnesses to be asked to appear before the panel made up of privy councillors.
The inquiry will examine the years between the northern summer of 2001 and July this year, including the lead-up to the conflict, the military action taken by Britain and its allies and the aftermath.
A key focus will be on the decisions made by Mr Blair and his fellow ministers and senior government officials to take part in the war and why.
Sir John vowed the inquiry would be open and transparent and would not shy away from criticising the British government if warranted.
"If we find ... that people fell short in their duty, made mistakes, acted wrongly, we shall most certainly say so," he said.
"The inquiry is not a court of law and nobody is on trial. But I want to make something absolutely clear -- the committee will not shy away from making criticism."
The inquiry was announced by Prime Minister Gordon Brown last month, honouring a pledge that the run-up to and conduct of the US-led and British-backed conflict would be examined once British troops pulled out.
tonight
So anyway, tonight was a fun, quiet night with Amber, which was just what I needed. We hung out over here and then walked downtown for about 30 minutes to see friends. Now I'm just relaxing with Hank on the couch, contemplating going to sleep or staying up and doing some cleaning. Exciting! ;)
Tomorrow is a day dedicated to relaxing and I'm going to fully enjoy it. I'm looking forward to a great workout in the AM and movies during the day.
Goodnight, I think sleep wins! xo
Michael Jackson's Hair to be Turned into Diamonds
Cohen eventually sold the locks of hair, along with the jacket, to a collector named John Reznikoff, who is now selling the hair to LifeGem, a company that specializes into turning hair into diamonds.
Dean VandenBiesen, founder of LifeGem, said in a statement, "LifeGem specializes in creating diamonds from locks of hair. Our plan is to give people an opportunity to own a diamond made from Michael Jackson's DNA. We are currently evaluating the hair sample to determine how many diamonds can be created. This will be a limited collection and we anticipate great interest."
This isn't the first time Renzikoff and LifeGem have worked together—in 2007, they created a collection of diamonds from Beethoven's hair.
Guess this Reznikoff guy has a bit of a hair fetish! He owns a large collection of celebrity hair, including pieces from Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Albert Einstein, and Marilyn Monroe.
Would you buy a diamond created from Michael Jackson's DNA?

BDA to lose Rs 700cr (super loot)
Mr Yeddyurappa has announced that he will be using his discretionary powers to distribute 340 sites among members of the state legislature and MPs. The Chief Minister is empowered to sanction a site of any dimension in any layout to people of his choice.
"Instead of allotting a large number of sites to political representatives only a certain percentage should be given to them. The remaining sites should be auctioned to earn the BDA more revenue. The Chief Minister should draw up an eligibility criterion for allotting the sites, which should not be given to those who already own a house in Bengaluru," Mr Shivakumar adds. According to him, the BDA has miserably failed in forming residential layouts and allotting sites to the public.
Over the last 12 years, between 1997 and 2009, only 923 sites had been allotted. "When scores of people are waiting for the BDA to allot them sites. Mr Yeddyurappa is on a site allotting spree among politicians instead of expediting the formation of layouts in the city for the people," Mr Shivakumar regrets.
Of the five layouts, planned recently, only two, Kempe Gowda Layout and Shivarama Karanth Layout, have been approved, according to him.
The BDA will stand to lose huge revenue if politicians corner so many sites, he warns, pointing out that a site in Koramangala costs Rs 10,000 per sq. ft , while a site in Sadashivnagar costs Rs 15,000 per sq.ft. BDA officers, however, contend the chief minister has a discretionary quota and cannot be questioned about who he chooses to allot the sites to.

the policewomen -(mami)
The police department has received some 3,944 applications for 40 posts of woman sub-inspectors that are on offer as part of the ongoing recruitment process for 400 SIs in the state.the department had been struggling to appoint women officers. In 1999, there were takers for only 20 posts. "The trend is surely changing, and it's a good sign", a woman police inspector told. There are a number of other firsts this recruitment season. In all, the department has received 45,269 legitimate applications for 400 posts, of which nearly a tenth of them — 4,287 to be precise — were received online, a facility introduced for the first time in police recruitment.
"This time, 40 posts are reserved for in-service applicants, another 40 for women. We rejected 1,751 applications for providing false or incorrect information, and another 203 for multiple applications,'' ADGP, Recruitment and Training, S.T. Ramesh said.
Thanks to the large number of applicants, the department is thinking of new ways to hire the best and eliminate the rest. As the process gets underway in late August, the applicants will be put through an endurance test, Ramesh said — again, for the first time in police recruitment.
Candidates will have to run 1,600 metres in seven minutes to qualify. Those who do move on to a round of long jump or high jump, and if they pass muster, then onto the third round of elimination – shot put.
In the next stage, candidates will be given a written test, whose answers will be published outside the venue immediately after the test in the interest of transparency. Those who get through this round will be screened by a 7-member interview panel.
Also for the first time, perhaps most importantly, the police department has made attempts to keep touts out and plans to put up boards outside the selection centres: "Manipulation, corruption and political interference will not help get jobs".

Wednesday night
Tollywood,strong Telugu
Tollywood is heading the Bollywood way by releasing their movies worldwide. With the 75-million strong Telugu community spread across several countries, filmmakers are taking the "international markets" very seriously. The overseas rights of big budget flicks are sold for anything between Rs 1 crore and Rs 1.75 crore while for small budget flicks, the rights cost around Rs 10 lakhs.
Magadheera is being released in over 15 countries simultaneously and will play on 1,500 screens worldwide, confirm sources with Geeta Arts, the film's production house.
Naga Chaitanya's Josh, Ravi Teja's Anjaneyulu and Junior NTR's Adurs will also have simultaneous international releases. Sudhakar Kothamallella, managing partner of Great India films, which buys the overseas rights of over six Tollywood movies every year, says, "We have a tie-up with Adlabs in the US. They have seven screens where we screen these films. In the recent past,
Kick, Arundhati, Kotha Bangaru Lokam and Akashamantha did very well at the international Box Office."
Interestingly, to classify the popularity of actors, distributors use a grading system. Mahesh Babu and Pavan Kalyan movies are the most sought after by T'wood and they are placed in the 'A++' category along with directors like Shekar Kammula and Trivikram Srinivas. Nagarjuna, NTR Junior, Dil Raju and Charan belong to the 'A' category, while stars like Allu Arjun and Prabhas are placed in A- category.
Directors admit that it is primarily also a profit-driven move. Director P.C. Aditya, reveals, "The collections we get in 10 days from the US market is equal to the 100-day collection here since we are earning in dollars."
Shyam Prasad Reddy, the producer of Arundhati, agrees. "Every movie's business opportunity needs to be exploited. Though Telugu movies are not as big abroad as Hindi films, a decent revenue is being generated," he says. Film critics, who are all for this move, feel this trend is ringing in a great boom. Parcha Sarath Kumar, member of the Censor Board and a senior film critic, says, "Directors are also using this hype abroad to publicise the film here."
