DONNY BARDO

How long had I been dead for? All my life maybe. The entire world was just a playground, a way-station for dead souls, deluding themselves into thinking that the afterlife was any different to their current ‘life’. If reincarnation is a reality, our immortal souls have been shifting from one perishable body to another for an infinite time period. Therefore, the concept of there being a difference between life and death is completely ludicrous. If life after death is more or less the same as your life before, why distinguish? This is as much the land of the dead, as the land of the living.

Growing up, as a child, my family and a substantial percentage of the entire country would get their food from Dunnes Stores. It is ironic that the place which sells food, which sustains our lives should be named after the mythical Irish King of the Dead; Donn.

…a reference in the death-tale of Conaire, who is slain by three red-haired men, ‘sons of Donn, king of the dead, at the red tower of the dead’. These three are further quoted as saying, ‘we ride the horses of Donn – although we are alive we are dead.’

Buddhism states that there are six intermediate (or bardo) realms where a soul can be reborn, along with a 7th pure realm known as the Ground Luminousity. Not realising that I had been dead all along, but thinking I had just died, I quickly began reading the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying to ensure the best possible afterlife, for a sinner such as myself. Reasoning that I had been dead for some considerable time–at least a few days– I must surely have encountered at least one of the bardo realms. Then it struck me. My habit of resolving the energy of the universe into recognisable and familiar patterns had duped me into perceiving the hereafter in precisely the same way as I had the world of the living before I died.

That UFO that I saw out my window on Oct 25th, and again from on top of the headland the next day, that must have been the dawning of the Ground Luminousity. I must have reinterpreted the liberation from cyclical death that the GL offered, as luminous extra-terrestrial craft come to rescue me from the Earth. Pretty soon I realised that I had past through the Bardo of the Gods; the faerie realm, the Bardo of the Monsters and Demi-Gods; the celebrity world, and finally into the human world. My next vision was of me as a chicken somewhere, destined for the pot. I felt physically sick.

Having drifted through the six realms of the bardo realms and having been deposited safely back on Earth, I realised that I had gone on a bardo excursion. Such things are not uncommon, in fact they happen all the time. To understand what I mean just think back to the last time a relationship you cherished ended abruptly. Tibetan Buddhist monks remark that each second that passes is a minute bardo running its course. What is remarkable is that my journey into the land of the dead coincided precisely with All Hallow’s Eve, when the gates to the underworld are thrown open and the dead literally walk the Earth.

A similar tale which occurs around Hallowe’en, can be found in the storyline for the movie Donny Darko. Here the protagonist’s name is in reference to Donn, the king of the dead. In Celtic thought, death was associated with winter (commencing after the feast of Hallowe’en), which in turn brought the darker months, hence the surname Darko. At the start of the movie, Donny is told by his ‘imaginary’ friend Frank that the world is going to end in ‘28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds’, which Donny writes on his arm as “28064212”. A version of this; 2864212, corresponds exactly to regional telephone numbers in my home town. This phone number, as far as I know, not in use.

Donny Darko, as the king of the dead.
Plot elements in the movie such as time travel and the literary references which intersect with the storyline, all strongly indicate to me that this is Donny’s own bardo excursion. Therefor, as the close time loop would suggest, Donny actually dies at the beginning of the movie, leaving the remaining part of the film as a type of introspective afterlife excursion in which he seeks to fix all of the deficiencies in himself and his society. Another of Richard Kelly’s movies, Southland Tales, quotes from T.S. Elliot’s poem The Hollow Men, wherein Elliot refers to this world as “the dead land” and “death’s other kingdom".

So it was that on Hallowe’en Night, the Celtic New Year’s eve ceremony, I found myself wandering home, dressed in a dark suit, as befitting the solemn occasion. Festival goers thronged the streets and pavements in ghostly masks and painted faces. And where was my mask? I was wearing it surely. Just as Donny asks of Frank, “Why are you wearing that bunny suit?” To which Frank replies, “Why are you wearing that funny man suit.” I might, as well reply in a similar fashion.

Life and death are no more different from each other than night and day, up and down, in or out. All of these things are human concepts, and human fallacies. Time does not abide by night and day, which is purely a happenstance of existence on this planet. Likewise, in and out are trivialities from a fourth dimensional (time) point of view, as everything that exists will at some point cease to exist. We live our lives as if walking on the surface of a Mobius strip or Klein bottle, at any time we could flip into the 'underworld' of death, and not even realise it.

It is even entirely possible that you have died a number of times already in this lifetime e.g. being knocked over by a car on the way to the shop. This gives Divine Providence, or your more interested future self, a reason to push the reset button, thus allowing your soul to choose from an infinite number of alternate realities where you did not die. The only problem that might arise from this solution, however, is that the more times you jump dimensionally the further you land from your original friends and family. It is therefore entirely possible that you could arrive at a dimension inhabited primarily by shape-shifting aliens and androids that cannot be told apart from ordinary humans. This is almost certainly what has happened to me.

GATEWAY SOLID

The solids as dimensional intervals between the six worlds.
The 16th Century mathematician and astronomer, Johannes Kepler initially believed––like so many before him––that the motions of the planets conformed to strict spherical pathways; a concept which had arisen in Classical times. Inspired by this, Kepler devised a method using the five platonic solids to measure the distances of the planetary orbits from the Sun and so devise their orbital length. At this time, only six planets were known to exists; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. This meant that Kepler could prescribe each of the five platonic solids, as intervals between the planets.

"The Earth [the sphere of the Earth] is the measure for all other orbits. Circumscribe a twelve-sided regular solid about it; the sphere stretched around this will be that of Mars. Let the orbit of Mars be circumscribed by a four-sided solid. The sphere which is described about this will be that of Jupiter. Let Jupiter's orbit be circumscribed by a cube. The sphere described about this will be that of Saturn. Now, place a twenty-sided figure in the orbit of the Earth. The sphere inscribed in this will be that of Venus. In Venus' orbit place an octahedron. The sphere inscribed in this will be that of Mercury. There you have the basis for the number of planets."

Kepler eventually disproved his own theory when he discovered that the orbits of the planetary bodies were not perfect circles, as once thought, but rather ellipses. This lead to he discovery of Kepler's Three Laws, which are still in use by astronomer's today. And, of course, his law that "an orbiting body sweeps out equal areas of space in equal times, no matter what its position along the orbit" contributed to the formulation of concepts for hypergeometric mathematics, which forms the basis of the natural world.

But what if Kepler's theory about the platonic solids being the intervals for the six worlds was not incorrect. At least not in its entirety, for you see, the platonic solids can also be applied to the six bardos (worlds/transitions) of the Tibetan Buddhist religion. These bardos are; the realm of the Gods, the realm of the Monsters or demi-gods, man, animals, the hungry ghosts and Hell. Our model of the six bardos of Samsara could then progress like this;

Hell; octahedron; Hungry Ghosts; icosahedron; Animals; dodecahedron; Man; tetrahedron; demi-gods; cube; Gods.
The geometric formulation of each shape would therefore act as a dimensional gateway to each of these realms in turn.

In his Mysterium Cosmographicum, Kepler also associates the platonic solids to each of the Universal Elements; air, water, universe, fire and earth. It is clear from this that the world of man and animals. therefore the Earth, exists collectively in the element known as Universe, and this describes why this 'bardo' is of such great importance to Tibetan Mysticism, and the path to achieving enlightenment.

THE SALVIA BARDO

The psychedelic effects of Salvia Divinorum––a member of the Sage family––can be described in terms of hyper-geometric harmonics. No-one should find this too surprising, as just this type of mathematics is considered to be the underlying structure of the Universe.

Firstly, it will be revealed to anyone who takes a satisfactory dose of this substance that the material reality, in which we live, is actually comprised of an infinite number of spermatozoon-like creatures –the plasmate – who continually soar upwards in a bountiful display of light and colour. These creatures are akin to the spirits and fairies that make life in the physical Universe possible. (See; Theosophy)

If, for any reason, you become fearful of this display, or you fail to remain within the nature of mind; as the Buddhist refer to it, then you will descend into the Bardo of Dharmata. Buddhists believe that when you die you encounter what is known as the Ground Luminosity. If you fail to recognize yourself in this shimmering light, then you will pass to one of the 100 Mandalas; each one controlled by either an enlightened being or a wrathful one. I believe that Salvia Divinorum is a gateway to this Bardo of Dharmata, and that, for many people, it is a place of pain and fear. Those who have taken it describe themselves being repeatedly ripped apart and then stuck back together.

They also describe a sinister presence, which may in fact merely be a facet of their own moral consciousness that they have yet to face up to. In addition to being ripped apart and recombined there is also the feeling of being conversely stretched to a point at infinity (a mathematical device used in the formation of eliptical curves) and of being pressed, face-first, into an acute angle which is associated with a powerful gravitational force; commonly refered to as Salvia Gravity. Once free, of the grip of this force, the process of dissolution; of being rendered into an almost infinite number of thin slices, and of passing over a leading edge, occurs once more.

The experience of leading edges and corners has lead some people to speculate that they are trapped inside a five-sided polygon, of some kind. It should be noted that the force, or energy, that drives a person around this object is by no means inseparable from one’s own energy, and this means that we are that object, at least for as long as the experience lasts.

The object (for want of a better term) is best described by hypergeometric harmonics or by the hyperbolic tiling of Poincare’s Disc and the Riemann Sphere. To illustrate this concept take a look at the drawing below.
Poincare's Disk Triangles
Imagine that your body is represented by the point on the sphere labelled 1/0. This fraction represents an infinity of other fractions (or lines) combined. Now when the Salvia Divinorum takes effect all of these lines break away, one by one, and travel in a clockwise direction around the disk. Then, when it comes time for the Central Channel––that channel which contains your own conscious perspective––to move, you find yourself being wrapped around the Poincare Disc, ascending to the hyperbolic space above, representing the infinite. Although your conscience is stretched to infinity, it travels the line in a finite amount of time; because it is the line. It then reconvenes at one of the fractional vertices, or corner. Here you experience the feeling of being pressed into a corner (see; Salvia Gravity), because that is exactly what is going on. The feelings of Salvia Gravity become more intense at the rational numbers where an infinite number of vertices combine to produce the field. Implication; you are a rational number of some considerable value.

A good animation which describes this process from an outside perspective can be found here. It depicts a Poincare Disk textured by aliens or little green men. In reality the aliens would be stretched unrecognizably but at least it will serve as a visual reminder to anyone who found it difficult to follow the explanation above.

You might be wondering what any of this has to do with you. Maybe you aren’t interested in hyper-geometric mathematics or have no interest in taking Salvia. But, remember, the Salvia Divinorum experience closely mirrors the Buddhist description of the afterlife, so this could happen to you after you die. If you miss the Ground Luminosity, and do find yourself in this situation, don’t worry. Ultimately, nothing can hurt you (by that I mean your immortal soul). Secondly, the whole process is you, the vertices represent the chakras and the lines are the meridians of your energetic body. Despite being incredibly unpleasant, it appears to be an attempt to heal you, or free you from your personal Karma. Just keep praying or doing whatever daily ritual you do, as long as it is focused on love and compassion, and you will be fine. Good acts are essential too.
